Album Feature: Halcyon by Ellie Goulding

Artist: Ellie Goulding

Album: Halcyon

Loved Tracks: Anything Could Happen, Explosions, Dead in the Water, Joy, I Know You Care… Basically everything!

I have always admired strong, confident women who aren’t afraid of being out of the norm. She is someone who is ‘original’ and embraces her quirkiness, and aside from her music and shrilling bird-like voice, her originality is one of the things I admire about Ellie Goulding. I don’t personally know her (I wish) and I feel embarrassed admitting that I’m now officially a fan, I even followed her on instagram! hahaha I’m so hooked in her latest album that I wanted to feature her most favorite song of mine, but then I find it hard to pick among the tracks because I loved every single one of it! So I figured, ‘what the crap, I’ll feature her whole album instead’ hahaha

There’s always a line from a song that fits perfectly in every situation. From her first album entitled Lights, I have admired her since then but when her second album Halcyon came out, man was I mesmerized. And as I listen to her tracks, I can’t help but notice the irony of the album title from the songs. It’s not everyday that I come across with this kind of word so thanks to Webster’s Thesaurus for helping me out what this word means. It means peaceful or serene, which makes it ironic because the album was inspired by her heartache and recent split from her boyfriend. Well, as for most artists, sorrowful experiences result to such great achievements 🙂

Like I told you earlier, I find a hard time choosing among the tracks for my fave because I really think that every single one of them is a rare mixture of heartache and truthful experiences, which I love about most songs that I listen to. Not only is she focused on the pains, but each track also give you hope. This album is like a storytelling from her failed relationship to her dad’s abandonment to their family when she was still a child, but also in the end, she expresses her forgiveness and acceptance of the terrible things that occurred and uses these experiences to inspire and create a great vision of art.

This is Ellie’s single entitled Anything Could Happen from her second album.

I really enjoy listening to this track over and over again. “After the war we said we’d fight together. I guess we thought that’s just what humans do. Letting darkness grow as if we need it’s palette and we need it’s color. But now I’ve seen it through, and now I know the truth that anything could happen.” I think generally the song talks about the hopes and  the reality of life, whether you’re turning a new leaf or getting rid of the past. Sure, there are ups and downs but anything could happen, so when you feel like the world has turned dull and grey, this song would remind you that you can always add some colors into your life, and the best is yet to come.

Her song Explosions is definitely one of my favorite of hers. It’s about someone who’s left and caused her extreme hurt. “You trembled like you’d seen a ghost and I gave in. I lack the things you need the most. You said where have you been?” Damn, this line is really painful.. I lack the things you need the most, it’s like someone has poured a bucket of icy cold water atop your head! It takes a lot of courage to realize and admit to someone, as well as to yourself, what you lack of and you’re able to accept that you can’t give them everything so it’s best to let them go or give way to someone who can. “I remind you of the days you poured your heart into but you never tried.Yeah, you did everything you could to remind that someone how much you were happy together once, but when their heart has completely forgotten about it then there’s no reason for you to hold back. “I’ve fallen from grace. Took a blow to my face. I’ve loved and I’ve lost, I’ve loved and I’ve lost.” This line is hahahaha “Explosions on the day you wake up needing somebody and you’ve learned, it’s okay to be afraid. But it will never be the same.” It’s really hard, especially when you’ve gotten used to being with that somebody and then suddenly you’d wake up one morning and you’re all alone in your bed, but sooner or later you won’t feel the awkwardness anymore and eventually you’ll learn to embrace and made peace with the new reality that he/she is gone. And you’ll finally be able to say these words without any bitterness in your heart, “I pray that you will find peace of mind. And I’ll find you another time. I’ll love you, another time.”

With her song Dead in the Water you can really feel the lament in her nostalgic and eerie melody. “I’m dead in the water. Still looking for ya. I’m dead in the water. Can’t you see, can’t you see?” The song is about a tragedy of still waiting for someone you truly care about. It’s sad I know, but I just love thing song! Hmmm… talking about my recent experience? hahahaha nah, I’m over it 🙂

This is her newest single from her current album. This song is entitled Figure 8.

This song is pretty dark and depressing but beautiful all the same. “I chased your love around a figure 8. I need you more than I can take. You promised forever and a day and then you take it all away.” The number 8 signifies infinity, never ending. That’s how she pictures their love, a never-ending orbit but then it all disappeared all of a sudden, and she’s left chasing after a love that was promised to her and long gone. Terrible.

Ellie’s songs are just great and full of stories in it. Her song I know you care has a great meaning to it, and truly touched my heart. This song is about her father who abandoned her family when she was still young and this song is her message of forgiveness. It’s hard to live everyday, for so many years with a grudge in your heart and be imprisoned by the hatred and angst of being deserted by your loved one. But in this song, she’s sharing to the whole word that it was insanely hard, but she’s finally made peace with it. Good for you Ellie, and I hope everything is doing well for you 🙂 And as she make a name for herself because of her pure talents and majestic voice, she also sings for the soundtrack of the blockbuster hit movie The Twilight Series: Breaking Dawn Part 2 entitled Bittersweet. If you haven’t seen the film yet, OMG!!!! You should! 🙂
