Keep Calm and Obey Grey

The book that everyone has been talking about over facebook, twitter, blogs and TV Shows, Fifty Shades of Grey is truly the best-selling novel of the year. More than 20 million copies has been sold worldwide (and counting) and considered the fastest selling soft-bound after Harry Potter. (Or so they say).

Well, its a no brainer actually. If you haven’t read or heard abot the three books by E.L. James entitled; 50 Shades of Grey, 50 Shades Darker and finally 50 Shades Freed, here’s a short synopsis about the story.

“When literature student Anastasia Steele goes to interview young entrepreneur Christian Grey, she encounters a man who is beautiful, brilliant, and intimidating. The unwordly, innocent Ana is startled to realize she wants this man, and despite his enigmatic reserve, finds she is desperate to get close to him. Unable to resist Ana’s quite beauty, wit and independent spirit, Grey admits he wants her, too – but on his own terms.

Shocked yet thrilled by grey’s singular erotic tastes, Ana hesitates. For all the trappings of success – his multinational businesses, his vast wealth, his loving family – Grey is a man tormented by demons and consumed by the need to control. When the couple embarks on a daring, passionately physical affair, Ana discovers Christian Grey’s secrets and explores her own dark desires.”

I got my copies as a gift from my colleague at work. She needed a drafting table for her Interior Design class and I have one so I decided to give it to her since I’m not using it anymore, and as an exchange she bought me these books. Isn’t she the coolest? 🙂

Well, I’ve been influenced by my sister to read books since I was in grade school and thanks to her, my English language and communication skills has improved since then. My first impression on this book was, “Okay, it’s an erotica book. So I’d expect a normal romance story or whatever.” And oh my, did it caught me off guard and turned my world upside down! LOL For some reason, I’m surprised that it’s actually being sold in the public bookstores or online where teenagers or young adults are free to browse at them or actually buy and read it. You see, I live in the Philippines where 90 percent of the population are conservative. Let me elaborate: Conservative in a way that couple doing PDA (Public Display of Affection) would meet raised eyebrows not just from the elders around them, in fact ALL the people around them. I even remember my mom covering my eyes every time a kissing scene is coming up on the television. So, seeing the books on the display windows of every bookstore is kinda new, well good-thing-new if you know what I mean.

As I was reading it, I can’t deny that I was utterly shocked, hence disturbed by the sudden turn of events. Who wouldn’t immediately fall for a beautiful, enigmatic, alluring, young billionaire like Christian as he was described in the story. I mean, come on, he’s truthfully every women’s dream guy! (Damn you, Anastasia!) He’s like Edward Cullen from Twilight, well except for the shimmering skin, whatever?! And the fact that he’s head over heels over a commoner like Ana and would do and give her everything: First class flights, over the top gadgets, and not just a simple car, an Audi! Who does that??!! It’s like the real-life fairytale story of Prince William and Kate Middleton, only more discreet haha

So why is this book so “IN” nowadays?

For me its because we’re unfamiliar with women embracing our sensuality and expressing it in a more daring and out-of-the-norm kinda way. Whether we admit it or not, the book, in its own sensually extraordinary way, it has become the porn version for women. And for me, honestly, it’s not all that bad. I mean, for centuries we just blink our eyes when men satisfy their fantasies with porn or when they go to strip clubs, so why women can’t do the same with an erotica book? If men are into VISUAL PLEASURE, then us women are into DETAILS. It’s a known fact, anyway 🙂

I remember a scene in F.R.I.E.N.D.S. Tv Series back in the 90’s where they featured an episode about Rachel reading an erotica book, it was so hilarious!

The reason why this book is so inspiring to women now is that it helped us embrace our sexual needs and fantasies and its like the author is telling us there’s nothing to be ashamed of. It’s one of human’s basic needs: Shelter, food and sex. And what’s more satisfying in a relationship than to share it with someone you love and loves you back right? Unfortunately for Ana, it’s the other way around. It’s more of a one-way-street kinda love story. Christian is offering her a beautiful life, one that is hard to resist, in exchange of being his Submissive: An individual giving his/her Dominant the overall control over them in an erotic episode as a lifestyle. And when I say overall, it means OVERALL. Go figure.

I’m not implying that women should read this book or explore with erotica novels, all I’m saying is: There’s so much more in this book than wild sex. They say this book is about feminism but some people are reading the message wrong. It’s not about going out there and have CASUAL sex at your hearts content, it’s about knowing what you want and what works well for you either sexually or not. For centuries, women have been living in the dark and considers expressing themselves sexually as a taboo, well time has changed and women are getting more vocal in terms of what they want and what serves them right and for me that’s a good thing.

That’s why this book is selling rapidly because it talks about women’s desire, how they want to be handled and caressed, how they want their men satisfy them not just physically but emotionally. Christian is incapable of love and he’s clearly indicating this to Ana, but she along with most of the women, wants more. Women wants more than casual sex, women have the hunger to be loved and treated accordingly. It’s like telling the Men’s World: We just don’t want having SEX, we want MAKING LOVE. That’s the bottom line. I think men should be reading this book more often than women because they could learn so much from it. They should consider our wants and satisfaction equally to their own. For years, women have been struggling to convey what they truly feel about their relationships, they are having discomfort when sexual needs is being discussed. And to be fair, men and women should really LEARN to talk about their sex life more openly. It wouldn’t only please them both, but it it will also deepen their relationship not only as lovers, but also as friends.
